ABOUT
Rakel Björk Björnsdóttir is an Icelandic independent artist working across music and the performing arts as a singer, composer, actress, playwright and producer, with a focus on original, interdisciplinary work. Her practice sits at the intersection of voice, storytelling and performance, merging musical composition with theatrical expression through her work with the alt-rock duo ÞAU, the vocal performance group Raddbandið and the rock band different Turns, as well as her solo music and freelance acting work.
Rakel trained at Complete Vocal Institute, graduated as an actress from the Iceland University of the Arts, and has additional training in music business from the University of Bifröst. She is the owner of ÞAU Company and runs her own recording studio, ÞAU Studio, in Hafnarfjörður.
As singer and composer in ÞAU, Rakel has released the albums ÞAU taka Vestfirði and ÞAU taka Norðurland, followed by concert tours around Iceland. The band is currently preparing it's third album, ÞAU taka Suðurland, and Rakel is also working on her solo album.
One of Rakel’s most recent works is the musical Who Wants to Be a Princess? at Tjarnarbíó Theatre, produced by Raddbandið, where she performed and also contributed as a playwright and composer.
As an actress, Rakel has built a strong presence in Icelandic theatre. She appeared in Room 4.1 by Kristján Ingimarsson Company, performed at Reykjavík City Theatre and later at CPH STAGE in Denmark. At Reykjavík City Theatre, she played Miss Honey in Matilda the Musical and portrayed Bubbi Morthens and two of his wives in the award-winning musical 9 Lives. Other credits include Don’t Dress for Dinner, HARK, The Fruit Basket and The Host in Copenhagen with the Nordic Beasts. This winter, she will perform in Christmas at the Boiling Point at the National Theatre of Iceland and the comedy show The Health Care Clinic at Tjarnarbíó Theatre.
Rakel also has experience in film and voice-over acting, with screen credits including Ferox, Sparrows, Fractures and The New Year’s Show. She is the Icelandic voice of Isabela Madrigal in Disney’s Encanto.
